Calculate The Duration of Your Test

The calculator below allows you to calculate maximum duration (in days) for which the test should be run.

Entering basic information about your test will calculate an estimated experiment duration. Traffic and conversion rates will vary in a actual experiment, the improvement experienced with some combinations can drastically affect duration. If, for example, one page exhibits a higher conversion rate than another page, the experiment will conclude more quickly.

Total number of days to run the test: X days

Existing conversion rate

This value should be set to the existing conversion rate experienced by your original page. The lower the conversion rate of your website the longer your experiment will take to complete. Sites that convert at 2% will take approximately half the time to finish than sites that convert at just 1%.

Expected improvement

Expected improvement is shown as a percentage. If you’re current conversion rate is 20% and you want to double that to 40% then you are looking for a 100% expected improvement. Improvement is the single most important factor to determine the duration of your test. If you do not have a figure in mind, keep the figure at 10%.

Number of combinations

This value is dictated by the number of pages and variations included within your test. To calculate multiply the number of test variations together. As an example, if there are four variations for the first section and three variations for the second section the number of combinations would be 4x3=12. Keep in mind that the number of variations can add up quickly! As another example if you designate six sections and want three variations for each the number of combinations would be 3x3x3x3x3x3=729.  The amount of time it will take for the test to complete is matched by the number of combinations. The fewer combinations mean your experiment will complete faster.

Daily visitors

This is the approximate number of visitors your test page gets per day. Higher volume of visitors will mean your tests complete faster.

Percentage of visitors included within test

This value indicates the number of visitors who participate in your test. A value of 50 would include only half of all visitors to your test page. The lower the value (0-100) entered will mean your test takes longer to complete.
